Finding Peace When Your Children Choose a Different Path
As mothers, we pour our hearts into our families. We teach, guide, pray, and do everything we can to help our children grow in faith and strength. But what happens when they make choices that go against everything we hoped for? When temple covenants, eternal family promises, and gospel teachings start to feel far away from the reality we’re living?
For many faithful LDS mothers, this is one of the deepest heartbreaks. We wonder where we went wrong, question our worth as a mother, and worry that our eternal family is broken.
But here’s the truth: your eternal family is not broken.
God’s plan is still unfolding, and His timeline is bigger than this moment.
The key to peace — even when nothing around you changes — begins with learning to create peace within you. That’s what the Reality Creation Formula helps us do.
What Is the Reality Creation Formula?
The Reality Creation Formula is a framework that helps us understand how our thoughts shape our experience of life — and how we can find peace even in circumstances we cannot control.
It’s based on principles taught by Jody Moore and rooted in eternal truths of agency, accountability, and the power of our minds to choose faith over fear.
Here’s how it works:
-
External Facts – These are the things happening outside of us.
Your son stopped going to church. Your daughter moved in with her boyfriend. Your family isn’t gathering for Family Home Evening anymore. These are facts — things that are true and observable — but they don’t cause your emotional pain. -
Sensory Experience – You see, hear, or experience the situation.
This is where the human part of us reacts. We feel the sting, the sadness, the disappointment. It’s natural and real. -
Internal Story (Thoughts + Feelings) – This is where our interpretation begins.
Our brain creates a story about what those facts mean.
For example:
“I failed as a mother.”
“Our eternal family is ruined.”
“If my child doesn’t come back to church, I’ll never be truly happy.”These thoughts feel true — but they’re stories we’ve created in an effort to make sense of pain. And those stories are what create our emotional experience.
-
External Behaviors – Our feelings drive our actions.
When we feel fear or shame, we might withdraw, criticize, try to control, or distance ourselves emotionally from our child — all in the name of love, but rooted in worry. -
Internal Reality – This is the life we create from the inside out.
When we change our thoughts, we change how we feel.
When we change how we feel, we change how we show up.
And when we change how we show up, we begin to create a new internal reality — one that feels peaceful, grounded, and full of trust in Heavenly Father.
The Formula in Action: A Real Example
Let’s take a common situation:
Your daughter decides not to go to church anymore.
External Fact: My daughter said, “she’s no longer attending church”
Story: “She’s lost her testimony. I failed her.”
Feeling: Shame and fear.
Behavior: You might cry, worry, or try to convince her to come back — which often pushes her further away.
Result: Do I have a testimony of my Heavenly Father and Savior and their plan?
Now let’s use the formula intentionally:
External Fact: She no longer attends Sunday meetings.
New Story: “My daughter is on her own spiritual journey, and Heavenly Father loves her perfectly.”
Feeling: Compassion and peace.
Behavior: You listen, love, and pray with trust instead of fear.
Result: A more peaceful relationship and a heart that feels aligned with Christ, I’m on my own spiritual journey.
See the difference?
The external facts didn’t change — but your experience did.
That’s the power of the Reality Creation Formula.
Finding Peace Without Needing Others to Change
Peace doesn’t come when everyone starts living the way we wish they would. It comes when we learn to live the gospel of peace ourselves — from the inside out.
When we stop trying to control our loved ones and start focusing on the story we’re telling ourselves, we open the door to healing. We begin to see our children through the Savior’s eyes — as infinitely loved souls on their own path home.
You can love your child deeply and let go of the fear that they’re lost.
You can trust that Heavenly Father’s plan includes them — even in their wandering.
And you can rest knowing that the Savior’s atonement is big enough for every story, every detour, and every heart.
Trusting Heavenly Father’s Timeline
When your child’s choices cause you pain, it’s easy to feel like God’s promises are delayed or forgotten. But trust this: He’s still working.
Our mortal view is limited, but Heavenly Father sees the end from the beginning.
He knows your child’s heart. He knows yours too.
And He’s weaving something beautiful out of what feels broken.
Sometimes, our greatest spiritual growth comes not from seeing the miracle we wanted, but from becoming the woman who trusts before she sees.
That’s what coaching helps you do — it gives you tools to anchor yourself in peace, faith, and love no matter what’s happening around you.
