The Mother in Heaven LDS doctrine is one of the most sacred of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While it is not often discussed in everyday church settings, this doctrine quietly shapes how Latter-day Saint women understand their divine identity, eternal worth, and relationship to God. For many women, learning what has been revealed about Mother in Heaven brings comfort, clarity, and a deeper sense of belonging.
What the Mother in Heaven LDS Doctrine Teaches Us
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that all human beings, male and female, are beloved spirit children of heavenly parents, a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother. It is a cherished and distinctive doctrine of the restored gospel. And yet, for many women, it remains quiet. Untouched. Sometimes even avoided.
And while it is true that our knowledge is limited.
What if it was never meant to be? If you feel the sting because she isn’t talked about, what if you are the one who is to reverently and boldly speak of her.
A Doctrine Worth Cherishing, Not Avoiding
- We know enough to recognize Her existence
And to understand the divine pattern of heavenly parents. What exists on earth is meant to reflect what already exists in heaven. We come from Heavenly Parents, Two divine beings, united, creating life together. Eternal life is created, expressed, and multiplied through united masculine and feminine divinity.
- Men and women are eternally interdependent. Different by divine design, not by accident. Each brings something sacred that the other doesn’t replace or replicate. A Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother united in purpose power and love.
- Understanding the Mother in Heaven LDS doctrine helps women see themselves not as secondary in God’s plan, but as eternal daughters with divine potential.
Mother in Heaven LDS Doctrine Every Latter-day Saint Woman Should Understand
We Are Her Children, created in her image.
In the Brigham Young discourses he said, “We were created … in the image of our Father and our Mother, the image of our God”
One of the most grounding truths in the essay is this: all human beings are beloved spirit children of heavenly parents.
That includes Her.
We often speak of God as Father, but restored truth teaches us that our spirits were parented, loved, and known by both a divine Father and a divine Mother.
She and Heavenly Father are united in purpose, working side by side.
Children deserve to know their parents. And we honor restored truth when we remember that we are not only sons and daughters of a Father, but also of a Mother.
Elder Jeffrey R Holland (then President of BYU) taught, “as mortal parents we can love so much and try so hard, what does that say of a more Godly love that differs from our own as the stars differ from the sun? On a particularly difficult day, – what would this worlds inhabitants pay to know that Heavenly Parents are reaching across those same streams and mountains and deserts, anxious to hold them close?”
She Loves Us
The essay describes us as beloved by our Heavenly Mother. Church leaders have taught that our Heavenly Parents are even more concerned for us than our earthly parents, and that divine influences are constantly working to help us.
That means love is not singular in heaven.
There is something profoundly healing about knowing that divine love includes a mother’s love. Especially for women who have struggled with comparison, perfectionism, or feeling unseen.
Both of our Heavenly Parents love us.
They are aware of us.
Both are invested in our return home.
Understand that God is not He, but Them (Heavenly Mother and Heavenly Father).
Created in Her Image
The First Presidency has taught that men and women are created in the image of both a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother.
That truth is especially tender for women.
Our bodies, our femininity, our capacity to create, nurture, and lead were not accidental. They reflect eternal design.
We are not secondary.
And we are intentional.
We reflect Her.
Our Divine Potential Includes Her
We often speak of becoming like Heavenly Father. But restored doctrine teaches that our highest aspiration is to become like our Heavenly Parents.
For women, this matters deeply.
If gender is eternal, then women do not disappear into a male model of godliness. We grow toward a divine feminine pattern that already exists. Mother in Heaven stands as living proof that exaltation includes women fully, eternally, and equally.
She Participates in the Plan of Salvation
The Mother in Heaven essay teaches that the plan of salvation was designed by Heavenly Parents who love us.
This means it was not created by the Father alone.
Mother in Heaven participated in the grand design of mortality, agency, growth, and redemption.
She Works With the Father for Our Salvation
Our Heavenly Mother is not distant or passive.
We may not know the details of Her work, but we know this: She is involved. And She is invested. She is engaged in the eternal progress of Her children.
Trust in Heaven.
An Exalted Being, Side by Side With the Father
Men and women cannot be exalted without each other. Just as we have a Father in Heaven, we have a Mother in Heaven.
That means She is exalted.
She is perfected.
Also, She is a creator.
She is glorious.
And that reality speaks powerfully to the eternal worth and potential of women.
This Doctrine Has Always Been With Us
From Joseph Smith to early Church leaders, from Eliza R. Snow’s “O My Father” to modern prophets, the doctrine of Mother in Heaven has never disappeared. It has been sung, taught, written about, and affirmed.
Silence around Her is not evidence of absence. It is often evidence of reverence.
But reverence does not require forgetting or keeping quiet.
Honoring Her Honors Women
The essay teaches that we honor women when we acknowledge that their eternal identity reflects divine godhood.
When we speak truthfully and reverently about Mother in Heaven, we lift women. We remind daughters of who they are becoming. We remind sons of the divine power inherent in womanhood.
Holding Sacred Truth With Reverence
The knowledge of our premortal life is limited. But limitation does not mean neglect.
We share what has been revealed about Christ, even while knowing there is more to learn. We do the same with Mother in Heaven, not with speculation, but with love, respect and gratitude.
Mother in Heaven is not an abstract idea.
She is a sacred truth.
And a quiet strength.
A divine reminder of who women are and who we are becoming.
Remembering Her changes everything.
